Through innovative programs utilizing the presence of Emotional Support registered mini steers, Steer to Success, the Youth Enrichment Initiative of Toasted Acres, instills hope, resilience, and personal growth in local disadvantaged youth.

Our Mission

At Steer to Success, our mission is to empower disadvantaged youth by providing them with unique emotional support animal experiences, and fostering personal growth, resilience, and hope. Through the gentle presence of mini steers and a supportive community, we aim to guide local young individuals on a path towards brighter futures. We believe in the transformative power of compassion, connection, and second chances, working together to make a positive impact on the lives of those around us. Our commitment is to build bridges to opportunities, and create a world where every young person can find redemption, healing, and the chance to thrive.

The Farmhand Experience: A Youth Diversion Program

The Farmhand Experience at Steer to Success is a unique 6-week program designed to educate students on the essentials of animal care, farm safety, and sustainable farming practices. Through hands-on learning at Toasted Acres, participants gain practical skills in caring for farm animals, develop a deep sense of responsibility and empathy, and learn about the importance of environmental stewardship. Each session builds on the last, offering students a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to maintain a healthy, sustainable farm environment. This program not only equips youth with valuable life skills but also fosters a meaningful connection between them and the animals they care for.

Fall Volunteer Program

The Steer to Success Fall Volunteer Program offers a unique opportunity for students aged 13 to 18 to earn service hours while gaining hands-on experience in animal care. Located at Toasted Acres in Upper Marlboro, MD, our program allows volunteers to work directly with our animals, including dogs, cats, cows, pigs, chickens, and ducks. Participants will be involved in feeding, grooming, and maintaining the animals' living spaces, all while learning valuable skills in responsibility, teamwork, and farm safety.

This 10-week program runs from October through December, with volunteers earning (1) Service Learning hour per session. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate detailing their total hours and contributions. Whether you're looking to fulfill service hour requirements or simply want to make a difference in the lives of animals, this program is an enriching experience that connects youth with the joys and responsibilities of farm life.
